What Measurements Are Needed for a Custom Fixed Ladder?

Accurate measurements are the foundation of a usable fixed ladder drawing. The total height is important, but it is only one part of the survey. A manufacturer also needs to understand the top transition, supporting structure, wall clearance, obstructions and installation method. The checklist below helps purchasing teams and site engineers collect enough information for a reliable proposal.

1. Measure the vertical rise

Measure from the finished lower standing level to the finished upper landing level. Do not measure only to the top of a wall or tank shell unless that point is also the actual exit level. State whether floors, paving, insulation or roof build-up are complete. If final levels are not available, identify the measurement as preliminary.

2. Record the top landing geometry

The top transition is one of the most important parts of a fixed ladder. Provide the height and width of any parapet, curb, tank handrail or roof edge. Show whether the user climbs straight onto a platform, steps sideways, passes through a gate or enters through a hatch. Measure the available clear width and note anything that could obstruct hand placement.

3. Confirm the ladder location and clearances

  • Available ladder width between walls, pipes or equipment.
  • Clear space behind the rungs for the user’s feet.
  • Distance from the ladder centreline to nearby corners and openings.
  • Bottom approach space and any risk from doors or vehicle routes.
  • Overhead clearance at the upper landing.

Include a front elevation photo and at least one side view. Mark the proposed ladder centreline directly on the image if possible.

4. Survey the supporting structure

Identify whether the brackets attach to reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, a tank shell or a separate support frame. Measure cladding and insulation thickness so the bracket can reach the load-bearing structure. The manufacturer can supply ladder brackets, but the project engineer must approve the anchor selection and verify the capacity of the supporting substrate.

5. Mark bracket restrictions

Show areas where brackets cannot be installed because of internal equipment, wall joints, windows, pipes or process zones. For tanks and silos, identify stiffeners, shell courses and any restrictions on welding. If the ladder must bridge an offset, provide the depth and height of the obstruction.

6. Define ladder and rung dimensions

Common project inputs include ladder clear width, rung spacing, rung profile and side-rail size. If the project standard already defines these dimensions, send the relevant drawing or specification. If not, the manufacturer can propose a practical arrangement for review. Anti-slip rungs may be selected for wet, dusty or outdoor locations.

7. Measure safety cage requirements

For a caged ladder, confirm the cage start height, internal diameter, ring spacing, vertical bar arrangement and top termination. The cage must not conflict with platforms, pipework or roof structures. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so the approved project standard should control the final dimensions. 8. Identify platforms and rest sections

Long climbs may require intermediate platforms, staggered ladder runs or other access provisions. Provide the available platform footprint and the direction of the next ladder flight. If a platform attaches to the same structure, include its elevation, width, projection and guardrail arrangement.

Common measurement mistakes

Frequent problems include measuring to the top of the parapet instead of the landing, ignoring insulation thickness, omitting the top exit direction and assuming the wall is suitable for anchors. Another common issue is sending a photo without a scale. A tape measure visible in the photo or one confirmed reference dimension makes the image far more useful.
