What Should Be Checked Before Installing a Fixed Ladder?

Most fixed-ladder installation problems can be found before lifting begins. A structured pre-installation review confirms that the delivered ladder matches the approved drawing, the supporting structure is ready and the installation team has the correct anchors, tools and lifting method. This reduces unsafe site modifications and delays.

1. Confirm the latest approved drawing

Check the drawing revision against the packing list and site documents. Verify total ladder height, module sequence, bracket spacing, cage start, top exit, platform positions and connection details. Do not install from an early quotation sketch when a later production drawing exists.

2. Inspect delivered components

  • Count ladder modules, cage hoops, vertical bars, brackets and fasteners.
  • Match part labels to the assembly drawing.
  • Check rails, rungs and cage parts for transport damage or distortion.
  • Inspect galvanized, painted or stainless surfaces.
  • Keep small connection parts in labelled containers until required.

3. Verify the supporting structure

Confirm that concrete has reached the required strength and that structural steel, tank brackets or support frames are complete. Check cladding and insulation thickness. Ladder loads must transfer to the structural substrate, not to non-structural panels. Any discrepancy should be reviewed by the project engineer before drilling or welding.

4. Check anchor details

Use the specified anchor type, diameter, embedment and edge distance. Confirm hole-cleaning and installation requirements for chemical or mechanical anchors. For welded brackets, verify the approved welding procedure, fire controls and coating-repair method. Do not substitute anchors based only on diameter.

5. Survey clearances again

Compare the actual site with the drawing. Check rung foot clearance, side clearance, cage envelope, bottom approach and top transition. Make sure doors, pipes, cable trays, roof equipment and vehicle routes do not conflict with the ladder. Confirm that future maintenance access will not be blocked.

6. Plan assembly and lifting

Decide whether modules will be joined on the ground or installed separately. Identify approved lifting points and avoid lifting from cage hoops or rungs unless designed for that purpose. Prepare temporary restraints so the ladder remains stable before final anchoring. Establish an exclusion zone below the work.

7. Prepare tools and consumables

9. Install in the correct sequence

Set bracket positions from a controlled datum rather than measuring each bracket independently. Align the ladder and confirm stand-off distance before final tightening. Join modules without forcing misaligned holes. Install cage hoops and vertical bars in the marked sequence, then complete platforms, gates and top-transition parts.

10. Complete the final inspection

  • Ladder is plumb and securely attached.
  • Rungs are level, undamaged and consistently spaced.
  • All bolts and anchors are installed and inspected.
  • Cage is centred with the specified diameter and spacing.
  • Top exit provides clear hand and foot placement.
  • Sharp edges, temporary attachments and debris are removed.
  • Coating repairs are complete and documented.

Handover and future maintenance

Keep the approved drawing, anchor records, bolt inspection, coating report and any fall-protection system documentation. Establish an inspection schedule based on environment and frequency of use. After significant impact, corrosion or structural modification, remove the ladder from service until it has been assessed.

Conditions that should stop the installation

Pause work if the supporting structure differs from the drawing, specified anchors are unavailable, critical parts are damaged or the ladder conflicts with live equipment. Installation should also stop when weather makes lifting unsafe or when the required fall-protection and rescue arrangements are not in place. Resolving these issues before continuing is faster and safer than modifying the ladder without approval.
