The ladder should be treated as a complete system: rails, rungs, cage, brackets, platforms, bolts and anchors all face the same environment.

Hot-dip galvanized carbon steel

Hot-dip galvanized steel is widely used for outdoor industrial ladders because it provides durable zinc protection at a practical cost. It is suitable for many factories, rooftops, tanks, silos and water-treatment sites. Fabrication is normally completed before galvanizing so welded joints and cut edges receive coating.

The design should include vent and drain holes for hollow sections. Galvanizing thickness, appearance and repair requirements should be stated in the project specification. After installation, any site-cut or welded area needs an approved zinc repair system.

Painted or powder-coated carbon steel

Coated steel can match a project color and perform well when surface preparation and coating thickness are controlled. Its weakness is local damage: scratches, drilled holes and edges can expose carbon steel. 304 stainless steel

304 stainless steel is commonly used in clean indoor areas and moderate outdoor environments. It has an attractive finish and does not depend on a zinc coating. 316 stainless steel
